SCARCE 1ST TYPE MARTIALLY MARKED HENRY MODEL 1860 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Serial number 3924. Caliber 44 Rim Fire Henry. The brass buttplate is first type with round heel and large trap door and corresponding large recess in the stock. Right side of receiver is inspector marked “CC” with corresponding “C.G.C.” (Charles G. Chapman) cartouche and “C” inspector initials. Buttstock has the strong cartouche stamped in the wood on right wrist and there is a small “C” inspector initial on right heel of the buttplate with a corresponding small “C” adjacent on the buttstock. Serial number was observed in the usual places, on the top flat of the barrel between the receiver and rear sight. There were only 1,731 Henry rifles procured by the Federal government for issue to Federal units.  This rifle falls within the Type I martial Henry grouping in the 3000 range. There were approximatly. 800 more Henry rifles procured in the 7000-9000 serial range. Regardless, this rifle is one of the more rare firearms issued during the Civil War.

Fine untouched condition. Barrel and magazine tube retain a light, original uncleaned patina. Receiver has a nice mellow mustard patina. Stock is sound with handling marks and saddle wear.  This rare Henry rifle is fresh to the market and never been another collectors hands and acquired direct from a North Carolina family.

Further research just brought to our attention shows a positive ID as to the soldier that it was officially issued to. Based on the early 1st model US government issue it was first issued to the 1st DC Cavalry and then reissued to : Pvt. Robert Staples Co. K , 3rd. Veterans Vol. Infantry . We are planning to write for his Civil War Records for further possible history . Fresh untouched condition that is a true investment grade rifle.
