Rare 1862 Dated "NEW YORK" Contract Rifle-Musket

Our Price: sold

Rare 1862 Dated "NEW YORK" Contract Rifle-Musket. 58 cal. 40″ barrel. This is a very nice example of a scarce Civil War John Sarson and William Roberts of New York City contract of which a total of 5,140 model 1861 rifled muskets were delivered in 1862 and 1863 to U.S. Government. Sarson and Roberts had a much larger contract of 40,000 muskets but as with so many contractors they delivered many less guns to the high standards of U.S. Government inspection.

Consistent with other 1861 contracts being iron mounted, fitted with three flat bands that are spring retained, two leaf rear sight and swelled tulip tip ramrod. This gun is properly marked “US/NEW YORK/1862” with Eagle forward of hammer. Barrel is marked 'HF' just forward of bolster but is missing the usual date and “VP/Eagle Head” proof. Stock has a rack number just forward of butt plate that is unmarked. Trigger guard has sub inspector “V” guard. Two leaf rear sight which more closely approximates shape of M-1855.

Very good to fine overall condition. Metal is gray/white showing old cleaning, and some scattered staining. Markings are all crisp and discernible. Stock is sound with some edge wear and on old coat of varnish. Stock exhibits scattered storage dings, dents and scratches. Vent is clear although nipple is a little battered. This gun functions well mechanically and has a nice bore with discernible rifling that will clean to excellent.
