Extremely Fine US Navy Model 1841 Eagle Head Sword by N.P. Ames

Our Price: sold

Extremely Fine US Navy Model 1841 Eagle Head Sword by N.P. Ames. Measures 33 3/8 inches overall with a 28 inch slightly curved quillback blade, etched with patriotic and naval motifs, the Staff of Hermes on the right, 'United States Navy' on the left with oak leaf design and Ames marking with Springfield address.

Finely figured hilt is gilt brass with spring-hinged counterguards, acorn shaped quillions, sculpted 'screaming eagle' pommel and a ribbed and carved antique ivory grip. Leather sheath with engraved gilt brass fittings and a raised Ames scroll on the reverse of the throat.

Condition is outstanding. Blade is overall bright with strong frosted etching. Some minor stains and pinprick pitting appear in the last six inches. Hilt and scabbard fittings retain over 80% of the original gilt finish. Grip shows some age cracks and a mended chip near pommel.

This is one of the finest swords known of this pattern and would be just about impossible to upgrade.
