Rare North Carolina Surcharged Dragoon Sword by Ames. This example just surfaced in eastern North Carolina. It is marked 'NC' on the quillon and 'N.CAROLINA'  on the drag. Blade is maker marked and dated 1837 on one side and 'UNITED STATES' on the other.

As found condition. Brass hilt has clear and deeply struck 'NC'. Original wire with wear through the leather on bottom side of grip. Blade has patina stains and rust. Scabbard has an even thick brown layer of rust patina. The 'N.CAROLINA' marking is unmistakeably present  but partially obscured from rust.
