ADAMS REVOLVER INSCRIBED TO DURYEA ZOUAVE. 32 Caliber. Serial number 2825. Dual action revolver with a  3 1/4" octagonal barrel with brass pin front sight and fixed rear sight. It has 5 shot cylinder and a checkered 1 piece walnut grip. Rammer handle is attached to the left front side of the frame, plunger head is missing. Left side of frame is inscribed in period script “Chs. Fortescue / 5th Regt N.Y.V”. Charles Fortescue enlisted in the 5th New York Infantry as a 23-year-old corporal in April 1861 & was honorably discharged May 20, 1863.

According to Fortescue’s pension request, he contracted typhoid fever while in service on the Potomac and his arm has had been diseased ever since. Charles lived the last 20 years of his life at the Sandusky Soldiers home and died Dec. 27, 1923. A large file of provenance accompanies.  Good condition traces of original finish remain in the most sheltered areas, being mostly a gray brown patina with moderate to heavy pitting on right side of barrel, with lighter pitting on left front side of frame. Grip is sound w/ a couple of small gouges & shows heavy wear with dark oil staining. Mechanics need attention, sometimes hand will not engage. Strong dark bore with moderate pitting and one spot of heavy pitting. PROVENANCE: Ex. Norm Flaydermann collection, Ex. Lewis Leigh Jr. collection.
