31 1/2 inch blade marked 'Ames MFG. CO./CHICOPEE/MASS.' A gilt hilt with helmet head pommel and chain guard, and fluted bone or ivory grip. The crossguard in the form of a spread-winged or flying eagle in high relief, clutching a Federal shield. The straight double-edged blade with central fuller is etched with floral and military motifs. The gilt brass beveled florally decorated scabbard is marked: 'AMES MFG. CO./CHICOPEE/MASS'. An almost identical example is pictured on page 149 of the Ames sword book. The sword pictured in the book was owned by General Albert Sidney Johnston (1803-1862).

Above average condition for a sword that appears to have actually been carried. Scabbard retains 40-50% original gilt and is dent free. The blade is bright with frosty etching.
