Excellent American Silver Hilted Officers Saber US of A inscribed on blade Complete with Scabbard and checkered ivory grip. For an example of identical hilt, see figure 131 on page 137 of "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords" by Daniel D. Hartzler. The example shown in the book is stamped "II" and is attributed to John Janvier of New Jersey. This sword is attributed to the same maker.

Slightly curved, single-edged unfullered clip point blade, with blued and gilded panels on both sides. The right side features arms motifs and a wreath, while the left side has a large "U S / of / A" inscription as well as flags and floral motifs. The solid silver reverse 'P' hilt has a faceted birds head pommel and backstrap. The ivory grip has panels of checkering followed by a fluted section. There is a silver ferrule at the base. The sword is complete with its original black leather scabbard decorated with crosshatched patterns, mounts are silver.

Blade retains about 60-70% original blue and gilt finish with. Polished section has scattered areas of surface rust and an old coat of yellowing lacquer. Hilt retains a mostly dark patina with some bending to quillon. Ivory grip retains a pleasing honey patina with some minor chipping around pommel. Scabbard shows some crazing and losses to surface, mounts retain a spotted grey patina. A very attractive and patriotic silver mounted officer's sword
