J. Henry 1807 U.S. Contract Pistol

Caliber 56. Barrel. 9 15/16". This is one of the standard 1807 contract pistols supplied by Joseph Henry in 1807 and 1808. A vast majority of the approximately 1,400 flintlock pistols were converted to percussion such as this example. Conversion was done w/ drum & flat hammer. This pistol is in standard configuration w/ 56 cal. smoothbore 9 15/16" round. barrel stamped on top "J. HENRY PHILA". Lock marked "US" forward of hammer & vertically rear of hammer in 2 lines "HENRY PHILA". Mounted in 1 piece walnut stock with inspector's cartouche opposite lock "V" over "JS" in trefoil. Gun is brass mounted with wood ramrod. There is a small brass blade front sight & a groove cut at breech for sight at rear.

Good to very good overall as restored. Mechanically functional wwith smooth pitted bore. Metal overall is brown/plum with pitting. Stock has been stretched from rear ramrod pipe forward to muzzle with both ramrod thimbles being excellent restorations, otherwise gun appears original & matching. Markings on metal are all discernable. Cartouche is light but discernable. PROVENANCE: Collection of Lewis Leigh Jr.
