Rare Confederate Bilharz & Hall Carbine produced circa 1863 in Chatham, Virginia. 58 caliber, serial number E58. 38" overall length; iron mounted except for brass nose cap; ramrod attached with swivel device. 22" round barrel marked opposite lock with "P" ("proved"). Serial number and cryptic "E58" appears on interior of lockplate and underside of barrel. Serial number also found stamped on bottom of stock rear of trigger guard.

Excellent condition overall. Barrel has smooth brown patina more pronounced at the breech with a bold proof mark "P" visible. Gun is original and complete with exceptions of restored and possibly contemporary hammer screw, sling swivel, and rear sight. Remainder of metal is smooth with a dark gray/brown patina with areas of pitting especially on buttplate. Stock is sound, above average for other examples with burnout near bolster, 2 small vertical wood inset repairs are seen abutting back of bariel at tang. Serial number behind trigger guard is visible in outline only. Mechanically fine with sharp rifling.

It is estimated that fewer than 300 carbines were produced of this pattern.
