Rare US Model 1855 Harper’s Ferry Rifle Dated 1860

Our Price: $3950

Rare US Model 1855 Harper’s Ferry Rifle Dated 1860. Caliber .58. This standard production 2 band rifle is 49" in overall length, iron mounted, with patchbox and saber bayonet lug. 33" barrel has Harper’s Ferry eagle, with “V” (viewed) and “P” (proved) proofs and 1860 date. The lockplate is marked forward of the hammer “US/ “HARPER’S FERRY” and behind the hammer with date “1860.” Maynard tape priming door bears the usual right facing eagle emblem. Faint remains of a single oval inspector “cartouche” on the stock opposite lock. Barrel bands have the usual “U” (up) marks. Original ramrod with swell near tip.

1860 Dated Harper's Ferry rifles are quite scarce, many are attributed to Confederate assembling, regardless; this is a very attractive example with crisp markings in the metal.

Very fine condition as refinished. Metal overall is bright where polished with small areas of pitting, markings are especially crisp including barrel date and proofs. Stock is sound and well fit though totally refinished, sanded & varnished, though 1 inspector's cartouche can be seen in outline opposite lock. There are 2 repaired hairlines and small chip repair just behind breech tang on left side. Mechanics are excellent with crisp rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Ex George Wray Collection; Atlanta History Center 2005.
