German origin, two triggers, wooden covered patch box, signed on top of barrel “J.G. Fiedler in Ulm”, (similar short rifle illustrated on p. 226 of George C. Neumann’s book Battle Weapons of the American Revolution, Neumann states that 4,000 short rifles were used by Hessian (German) troops in the war), 34 1/2″ l. 

Rifle has wonderful incised carving on the stock. Nicely formed patch box and implement box. Approximately 58 caliber with 7 lands and deep grooves. Note the number '2' engraved on the butt plate. A fine example.
