Serial number 5438, .54 caliber rifled barrel with folding rear sight, case colored frame, patent markings nearly illegible, lock plate marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co/PROVIDENCE R.I.", walnut stock with no visible cartouches.
Barrel lg. 21, overall lg. 39 1/8 in.

Carbine bears the Confederate Clean & Repair Inspection stamp 'T' just in rear of the trigger plate. Several installations, most in Virginia, were involved with cleaning and repairing captured arms as well as those gleaned from battlefields. The 'T' inspector mark is one that is encountered least and at this time it's meaning is not known.
This carbine appears to be modified for infantry use. The sling bar and ring have been removed and the mounting holes filled with lead. I've included a picture of the cover of "Captured & Collected" Confederate Reissued Firearms by Capt. Steven W. Knott. A copy of which is included with the purchase of this Confederate Arm.
