Excellent Palmetto Musket - ex. Fred Edmunds ex. Texas Civil War Museum. This is a prime example of the production of the Palmetto Armory in Columbia, South Carolina. It is basically derivative of the US model 1842 musket, being produced from surplus and condemned parts purchased from various northern contracters.
Lock markings are sharp. 'Palmetto Armory S*C' stamped foward of the hammer in a circular cartouche that surrounds a Palmetto tree and 'Columbia S.C./1852' at tail of lock.
Barrel marks are also sharp and feature the same 'W. Glaze & Co' often seen on Palmetto cavalry sabers but rarely seen on Palmetto firearms. VP over a deeply struck Palmetto tree appear on the breech and date 1852 on the barrel tang. The toe of the buttplate there is also deeply struck letter 'SC'. A tiny 'S' appears on comb of stock in this area, meaning unknown but possibly an inspectors mark.
Another interesting aspect of this musket is that it was constructed using a rear brass band with middle and front band made of steel. This has been observed on just a few these muskets.
100% original and authentic in every regard this musket has a solid provenance, once being part of the Fred Edmunds collection, passing through his hands where it eventually was displayed in the Texas Civil War Museum until its doors closed in late 2024.
The musket has also been documented by Palmetto arms expert Dr. Fred Novy and a copy his picture notes is included.
Overall condition is excellent. Most metal surfaces have been cleaned but retain good edges. Stock is also sound with good edges. There is a mentionable crack in the wrist from the tang that extends downwards to the heel of the lock. These is no movement here and strength is retained in this area.
