1808 Contract Musket by Rodolpho and Charles Leonard,
Canton, Massachusetts, c. 1813.
44 5/16 in., .73 caliber round barrel, the left side of the breech stamped with eagle head over "CT" proof mark in a sunken oval cartouche and "V" and a trace of a number stamped on the bayonet lug; flat lock plate with pointed tail stamped "CANTON/1813" and a spread wing eagle over "U.S." and "R.&C. LEONARD" below the pan, the inside of the lock plate stamped "TF" and with most parts stamped with a small "oo" and "1" stamped on the plate above the end of the mainspring; walnut stock with no obvious inspector's marks; iron furniture of proper form, the inside of the side plate stamped with a small "1," with sling swivels and steel rammer stamped 'US' with button head and curled jag on the end. 
Overall lg. 59 1/8 in.
Metal cleaned to bright. Original flint.


Rodolpho and Charles Leonard signed a contract on October 29, 1808, to supply 5,000 stands of arms at the cost of $10.75 each to be delivered within five years. Surviving records indicate that the Leonards delivered at least 410 stands in 1813 and a total of 1,956 stands by the end of 1814 (Peter A. Schmidt, U.S. Military Flintlock Muskets and Their Bayonets, The Early Years 1790-1815, (Woonsocket, R.I.; Andrew Mowbray Publishers, 2006), pp. 268-272).
