Extremely Rare Confederate Georgia Armory Rifle Lock

Our Price: sold

Extremely Rare Confederate Georgia Armory Rifle Lock serial number 17. Among the rarest of all Confederate longarms, The Georgia Armory rifle is the single most desirable. Only 2 complete and original examples have ever sold privately and the last one was $85,000 and now institutionalized, that makes this one the only example still in private hands. John Murphy and Howard Madaus in their monumental text “Confederate Rifles and Muskets” dedicate a chapter to these rarities and their history.

This 5 1/8” lock is a piece of Confederate ingenuity, most parts are serial numbered “17” internally & externally on hammer screw. Lock is stamped on tail vertically “GA ARMORY / 1863” in unique font not seen elsewhere. Hammer is also serial numbered on reverse “17”. The only replaced component is the sear spring which is not numbered & arsenal bright finished which Georgia Armory components are not bright polished, typical among CS manufacture. If you can't have complete rifle, why not have the most important part? Several museums have done the same.

Fine condition with smooth silver/gray patina with visible finishing marks. PROVENANCE: Howard Madaus estate collection; Penn Templeman collection, Atlanta, GA.
