Scarce US Model 1840 Paymaster Sword

Scarce US regulation 1840 pattern sword and scabbard for officers of the pay department. The regulation pattern with deeply cast and chased pommel with scrolling floral elements and a raised eagle in round cartouche at upper grip on either side, pineapple/urn finial, with scrolling upturned guard, shield langets, one blank, obverse with PD and stars in wreath border, etc. Blade etching a mix of military, patriotic and floral motifs. Blade oval in cross section. Brass scabbard with deeply cast and chased mounts.

Hilt has pleasant, aged patina. Langet letters "PD" shows remnants of silver. Blade has good edge and point. Silver grey with dark grey spots towards the tip, above the etched panels. Frosting shows grey. Etching is very visible. No maker address but appears to be Horstmann etching. Scabbard shows about 40 percent gilt with rubbing to coppery brown. Rings and mounts in place. A good example of a very scarce sword
