SERIAL NUMBER C747. Caliber 451. Serial number C747. This is a military target rifle of type possibly used by the Confederacy, it is similar configuration to known Confederate rifles, but only 1 identified Confederate rifle is noted as "Best Quality" like this one. 36" Barrel overall 52", iron mounted. The lock is marked "Whitworth Rifle Co. Manchester" and crown with sheaf over "W". The barrel bears 52 bore Birmingham proofs, "C747" and "WHITWORTH PATENT". Checkered wrist, forearm and is mounted with Baddely bands. It has micro adjustable front sight, rack and pinion rear with tapered pin. There is a safety present on the lock and has a standard Whitworth ramrod. It has an unusual, detachable trigger bow.
CONDITION: very good overall. Moderate to heavy pitting on all metal. Markings still discernable as seen on photos. Stock is sound, solid, well fit with erosion & damage at buttplate. Mechanically fine with well defined hexagonal rifle bore with light pitting. Accompanying leather sling appears to be repro. PROVENANCE: Atlanta History Center 2005
